Gap year travellers wondering which countries to visit on their trip of a lifetime could consider Cambodia.

The area known as Angkor, which is famous for its ancient temples, has been voted the most recommended UNESCO World Heritage Site by tourists.

Traveller review website TripAdvisor collected feedback submissions from almost a quarter of a million people who have together visited 789 of UNESCO's 911 World Heritage sites.

Angkor came out on top, with web users describing it as "absolutely breathtaking" and "one of the wonders of the world".

Steve Kaufer, chief executive and founder of TripAdvisor, said: "The fantastic response to the campaign shows that travellers have a passion for helping preserve the places that matter most."

Other sites that made it into top ten were the historic centre of Rome, Venice and its lagoon, the works of Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona and the old and new towns of Edinburgh.
